The Taiji (ying and Yang) is represented in everything that makes up the universe. In my life there is heaven and earth, Man and a woman, hard and soft, and more importantly there is my police career and artistic life's mission. These two areas are very contradictory, yet in my life they influence each other as well. My art work represents a duality as well now. For the most part, my work has been influenced by crime and the world of policing I am submersed in: dark fingerprint inks, realistic portraits of art criminals and detectives, all done in browns, darks and lights. But the complimenting opposite to this has been Bagua Quan, which now has overtaken some of my creative process prompting me to paint in bright colors and create my own mythology and explore my own universe as I pursue my own personal mental, physical and spiritual cultivation. Besides physical sculpting and internal self cultivation, practioners of Bagua Quan become submersed in culture, Chinese classics, and the finer aspects of humanity, such as integrity, honor and understanding. This art is giving my mind a huge break and much needed relaxation from my other darker artworks and my police world. My goal is to retire in seven years and ten months from the police dept, practice Bagua Quan all morning, eat lunch with my beautiful wife, and paint and draw all evening. Art is life and the two must be lived in a seamless unity!

The begginning and its story

Here is the 6' 8" x 8' canvas after I stretched it, brushed on three coats of primer and then brushed on a burnt sienna ground. This was in a earlier studio (I was using the garage of my abode as a studio during this time period, shortly after I had to move out of my Manhattan studio.

This photo of me and William Youngworth III was taken in the thext studio I moved into. Here you can see the underpainting with portraits and background. You can also get an idea of the monumental enormity of this canvas. I had to leave this studio as well, because there were too many leaks in the roof and the canvas was in danger. I now have an outstanding art studio on the third floor of a great building that houses other artist studios. This is where I am now putting on the finishing touches to this art theft historical Gardner painting.
